Sunday’s Idea v1

Every Sunday night—starting now—I will post an idea.

It might be a book. Or a business model. Maybe a research project. It might be a few words. It might be fifteen hundred. Who knows.

The point is to stimulate creative juices. To get us thinking. To keep our minds keen and sprightly and all kinds of healthy. If you have an idea of your own, comment below and it will get mentioned next Sunday. This cycle will continue each week.

Alright, here’s idea number one:

Create an apparel/accessories company called Hugs Are Free. Model it after Life is Good. Run ridiculously clever and viral marketing campaigns, and get people like this involved. Make it a philanthropic business model.

Alright. There’s something to ponder. Feel free to comment below or suggest an idea of your own!

  2. That’s a cool idea. What about a website that desings your apparel/accessories for you based on your tastes/likes that you feed into the program? Once designed, they will deliver the custom made items to your door?

Maybe someone already thought of this?

  3. What a good idea! Way to keep yourself (and your readers) on your toes and force yourself to keep thinking and innovating.

This could be a good book down the line, too. ’365 days of ideas’ or some such.

  4. I love this idea of an idea every Sunday! Usually Sundays are boring for me, so this will spice it up a little.

I also like the Hugs Are Free concept, a business model like that is one that can make a big difference.

  5. Go for it. We will help you market it. I like a weekly post, it is a great way to keep people coming back. I will always wonder now what your idea is going to be on a Sunday, therefore, I will have to stop by and check it out! Cheers.

  6. Fab idea! You could make a book about 365 free hugs a year. I’d illustrate the bajeezus outta that.

I look forward to your apparel/accessory store. Let me know when it’s launched :)

  7. I remember watching that video many years ago. I used to have it on my ipod as inspiration – Thanks for bringing back the memories. Good luck in your Ideas Sunday. How about calling it something like the Sunday Sandbox.

  9. Hi Alan, I like the Idea idea.

Maybe “Free Hugs” is better than “Hugs are Free.” You could play on those viral videos that circulated a few years ago.

An apparel company is a big investment though. Maybe just start with a T-shirt and a website of positive messages.

An alternate would be something obscene, which would probably catch on with a younger market.

@John: You’re right, free hugs might be a more appropriate title. I would do market research between the two keyword phrases (Google Adwords campaign?) to determine what the better choice would be. I also agree with you about starting small. Create a few designs that can be printed on t-shirts, mugs, stickers, etc., get some rockstars involved, build the movement organically, meaningfully. Maybe adopt a TOMS Shoes kind of business model.

    Thanks for your input!

  10. Hehe, I’ve run across the “free hugs” folks a few times in a few different places around the world. It’s a fun, friendly cool thing.

This is a great idea to share your ideas Alan! Thanks for doing this. I’ve had a few great ideas over the years (products which I thankfully still haven’t seen created) and I’m thinking about opening up and sharing with the world too. Sort of a “steal this idea” thing. Cheers

@Cody: Exactly what I’m going for. Ideas to share and use-at-will. I’ll use this weekly post as a soap box to test out ideas amongst the community of readers here. So far I’ve seen some good comments!
