Sunday Sandbox: Religious Leadership

Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi, Georgia from atop Narikala Fortress

Last week’s idea:

What about a fitness center that only uses infomercial-advertised equipment? The BowFlex, Body By Jake, ab equipment, etc? You could dedicate space for a TV with Taebo, Zumba or P90X workouts.

Last week’s comments:

Nate uses the Perfect Pushup and thinks it would be an appropriate addition to the gym (as do I!), and Jonny wants to advertise ice cream. Jonny, I’m not sure where you’re going with that…why ice cream?

This week’s idea:

A book that explores the organizational and hierarchical framework of religion by looking at its leaders. How are the world’s top religious leaders selected? Can we draw parallels between Catholic seminaries, Judaic rabbinical schools and Buddhist monastic systems of education? I’d be interested in unraveling the process of leadership, the way leaders are born and learn and develop, the necessary hurdles to jump. Can we make comparisons between the Pope, the Dalai Lama, etc?

Happy week everyone. After a month of travel, I finally made it home! Look for my next update about Kathmandu early this week. Talk soon.

  1. This would be a great comparison to see. Maybe it could decrease the negativity that comes between religions? We could realize that we all aren’t that different at all, and basically want the same things.

  2. This is an interesting idea. I’ve thought a lot about modeling the similar characteristics of the religions themselves, but pointing the lens back at the leaders would almost certainly yield some useful results.

Every attempt to deconstruct and build a model I’ve seen has been interesting. Jack Schwager’s Market Wizards comes to mind immediately.
