Sunday Sandbox: As Seen on TV Fitness Center

Pashupatinath, KathmanduPashupatinath Temple Complex, Kathmandu

Last week’s idea:

There are professional networking sites. And then there’s 46 Seconds – a refreshing and unique way to connect with potential employers. All profiles are simple and standardized. Resume-based. Nothing too fancy. But the kicker is the video component. Each user can upload a video – no more than 46 seconds long – explaining why he or she is a rockstar candidate for a particular job. Ideally, career centers and companies would get involved, but I think this could work well at a grassroots level. Lots of potential for iteration.

Last week’s comments:

Nate thinks that this might be a good way to break into the online job market, because most sites like Monster, CareerBuilder and ResumeRabbit are overloaded with information.

Ari posted the link, www.videoresume.com. Thanks for the tip! I like how they categorize the videos into Employer Videos, Modeling/Acting, University Videos, etc. The site could use a design facelift, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future development.

This week’s idea:

What about a fitness center that only uses infomercial-advertised equipment? The BowFlex, Body By Jake, ab equipment, etc? You could dedicate space for a TV with Taebo, Zumba or P90X workouts.

A wacky idea I guess, but who knows, I’ve certainly seen stranger! Just landed in Tbilisi, Georgia and will be here until Friday, when I triumphantly return to Boston. Due to excessive friend/family time in Kathmandu, I have managed to fall behind in my travel updates, so on Tuesday and Thursday expect posts from my last two city surveys of Dushanbe and Kathmandu. Hope everyone is doing well out there!

  1. Very creative idea. I always wonder as to the effectiveness of these infomercial products. I’ve bought one, the Perfect Pushup, and I love it.

  2. I would buy some advert space and advertise irresistible icecream right in front of the people that were running. I am cruel like that.

  3. If the fitness television personalities would teach me how to use the equipment, then I am sold.

    Glaring omission: The Gazelle.

  4. Interesting concept. I’ve never seen a gym that had at least 1 piece of as seen on tv products. Bowflex, Ab Circle Pro and Tony little products have made millions yet they don’t crack any gyms. You can beat the basics I guess.

  6. I agree with Nate; this idea definitely represents a new innovation in the concept of the CV. It’s great to see people starting to think outside the box in order to get jobs; certainly this is vital given the current employment situation. I feel that showcasing your capabilities visually has the potential to be a great deal more effective than doing so by traditional means. Not only does it demonstrate creative capability and initiative, it can give an employer a much clearer sense of where you would be suited in a company. Using video allows you to sidestep the application process and anticipate an interview; the employer has in a sense ‘met’ you without having to arrange this formally. I really believe that we will see this format of CV take off in the coming years.

  7. A fitness center that uses only equipment that are shown in infomercials is a brilliant idea. It would give people the opportunity to try out the equipment, as most people tend to not fall for those ridiculous infomercials. Also, it’s a good way for manufacturers to make some extra cash.

  8. As an employer myself, this would be 1 way to more carefully analyze candidate very quickly. Charisma has a lot to do with job selection in many industries, especially when customer facing. Thanks for sharing the 46 seconds link!

  9. Infomercials are one of the most effective ways to advertise, in my opinion. They not only make people aware about the idea of a particular product, but also provide all relevant information. It’s amazing! BTW, I love that photo of the temple in Nepal. I have had the honor of visiting it, and I must say that photo makes it look much more amazing than it actually is.
